Vol. 426 No. 5

Written Answers. - County Dublin Road Improvements.

Austin Currie

Ceist:

136 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for the Environment the steps, if any, which have been taken since February, 1992 when seven people lost their lives in the Grand Canal tragedy near Lucan, County Dublin in an attempt to ensure that something similar will not happen again; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The carrying out of works on the road in question is entirely a matter for Dublin County Council. I understand that, since the accident, the council have carried out the following measures to improve safety on the road:

—Delineators have been provided along the canal bank.

—The surface has been repaired.

—A "junction ahead" sign has been provided on the approach to the bridge at the 12th Lock.

—A crash barrier has been provided at the culvert where the River Grifeen goes under the canal.
