Vol. 426 No. 5

Written Answers. - Fishing Gear Restriction.

Dermot Ahern

Ceist:

207 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for the Marine if his attention has been brought to the feeling among fishermen against any proposed ban on twin or multi rig trawlers; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that some fishermen may be opposed to the introduction of further restriction on the use of particular types of fishing gear. However, it is most important to stress that fish stocks in the Irish Sea in particular are seriously in decline and that this problem has to be addressed as a matter of urgency. The Department of the Marine is currently considering how the present difficulties can be resolved in order to ensure a sustainable livelihood for the fishermen concerned.

Multi rig trawling, to which the Deputy refers, is a method of fishing that is at present being reviewed, along with other methods, in the context of an examination of stock levels in the Irish Sea. In the light of that review, including consultation with fishermens' organisations, it may be necessary to take measures, which might include restrictions on certain types of gear, in order to conserve and protect stocks that are now under threat.
