317 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Education if she has received an application from Galway Corporation for financial assistance towards the cost of extending the Leisureland Jimmy Cranny swimming pool by 18 metres; and if she will make a statement on the matter.
As the Deputy is aware, my Department is providing a grant of £1 million to Galway Corporation towards the cost of a scheme of refurbishment and extension of the Leisureland complex which is due to be completed in the coming summer.
A further request was received from Galway Corporation for funds for additional developments at the complex including the extension of the pool to 50 metres. The Corporation was informed, however, that all of the funds currently available under my Department's multiannual programme for the provision of major sports facilities at regional and local level were fully committed to existing projects and that it is not possible to provide further grant assistance.
