Vol. 426 No. 5

Written Answers. - Water and Sanitary Services.

P. J. Sheehan

Ceist:

23 Mr. Sheehan asked the Minister for the Environment if, in view of the huge backlog of small water and sewerage schemes awaiting implementation by numerous county councils throughout the country, he will make finance available to each council concerned by reintroducing the minor water and sewerage schemes.

The water and sanitary services programme, which is co-financed under a range of EC programmes/initiatives, is focused on the needs of industry, agriculture, tourism and housing and on achieving compliance with standards for drinking water, waste water treatment and pollution control. Small water and sewerage schemes are, subject to priority, eligible for financing under the water and sanitary services programme. I intend that a reasonable number of priority small schemes identified by the local authorities will be included in the programme in 1993.
