Vol. 427 No. 6

Written Answers. - Irish National Organisation of the Unemployed.

Theresa Ahearn

Ceist:

136 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment if he will provide core funding for heat, light, telephones and wages to the Irish National Organisation of the Unemployed so that the organisation can continue to work; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

At a meeting on 4 February 1993, I advised the Irish National Organisation of the Unemployed (INOU) that I was not in a position to give any commitment regarding the provision of funding to the organisation in respect of its on-going running costs. I also pointed out that it still remained to be decided which Department is the most appropriate one through which to channel State funds for organisations dealing with the unemployed should the Government decide to make such funds available.

In the meantime, the INOU will continue to benefit from participation in the Social Employment Scheme, through which it has already received significant funding from the Exchequer.
