Vol. 427 No. 6

Written Answers. - Parking of Commercial Vehicles.

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

142 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for the Environment the progress, if any, made by him towards enabling local authorities to introduce by-laws to prohibit the parking of heavy commercial vehicles in residential areas, which is causing annoyance and inconvenience in these areas.

Under existing legislation, the making of by-laws or temporary rules to provide for controls on traffic and parking is a matter for the Garda Commissioner under sections 89 and 90 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961. The position in relation to controls on the parking of large vehicles is set out in the reply to Question No. 131 of 23 February 1993.

The statutory provisions governing traffic and parking controls are being reviewed and proposals for revised arrangements will be included in a Road Traffic Bill which is being finalised.
