Vol. 427 No. 6

Written Answers. - Amalgamation of Schools.

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

337 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Education if she will make a statement on reports that a study is being carried out by her Department examining the amalgamation of Ballymun senior comprehensive school with the junior schools; if her attention has been drawn to the fact that there is widespread local objection to the idea; the purpose of the study; the alternative plans, if any, which are being considered for the school buildings and grounds should amalgamation proceed.

There are three comprehensive schools in Ballymun — Junior Boys, Junior Girls, and a Co-Educational Senior School. These three schools are managed by a single board.

My Department has been in communication with the board regarding the more effective educational use of three school buildings and is currently examining its proposals and recommendations in this regard. In the course of the examination the possible options for alternative use for the buildings and grounds in the event of an amalgamation will be considered.

My Department is aware of the concerns of the local community regarding the implications, educational and social, for the Ballymun area, of a re-organisation of the existing three comprehensive schools. Cognisance will be taken of this also in arriving at a decision in the matter.
