Vol. 427 No. 6
34 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the progress, if any, which has been made with the provision of accommodation for a division of the National Museum at the Custom House Dock site.
The location of the Arts and Industrial Division — or the Decorative Arts Division, as it is otherwise known — of the National Museum has, from the outset, been an integral part of the development of the Custom House Docks site as a major urban renewal project and outline plans had been prepared, in consultation with the National Museum. I understand that site development works which would facilitate the construction of a Museum building are currently underway at the site.
I am concerned, however, to ensure that the future of the National Museum should be determined on the basis of a coherent, prioritised plan to address the location, exhibition and storage of all its important Collections over time, and for this reason I propose to enter into discussions with the Director of the National Museum and the Office of Public Works about the Customs House Docks site before adopting a final position on the project.
