Vol. 427 No. 6

Written Answers. - Garda Patrol Cars.

Paul McGrath

Ceist:

115 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Justice the decisions, if any, she has taken in relation to the provision of extra squad cars in Kilbeggan/Moate and Castlepollard in County Westmeath; if so, when these services will be provided; if they will be manned on a 24 hour basis; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The allocation of Garda manpower and resources to individual areas is a matter for the Garda Commissioner. I have made enquiries with the Garda Commissioner regarding the areas mentioned in the question. He has informed me that a Garda vanette was assigned to Kilbeggan/Moate on 24 February, 1993 which will also service the Ballinahowen area, and one was allocated to Castlepollard Garda station on 27 January, 1993 which also covers the Multyfarnham and Ballynacargy areas.

In addition the District Headquarters station at Granard provides mobile patrols in the Castlepollard, Multyfarnham and Ballynacargy areas, and the District Headquarters station at Athlone provides mobile patrols in the Kilbeggan, Moate and Ballinahowen areas. These district patrol cars operate on a 24 hour basis.
