Vol. 428 No. 5

Written Answers. - US Duties On EC Steel.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

117 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment if the recent decision by the US Congress to impose countervailing duties of up to 109 per cent on steel from the European Community will have any adverse effect on Irish Steel.

Irish Steel has not been directly affected by the recent US imposition of countervailing duties on steel from the European Community as the company has not been exporting steel to the US. Nevertheless, a potential closure of traditional US outlets for Community steel could further aggravate the oversupply situation in the Community market on which Irish Steel depends for 90 per cent of its sales.
