Vol. 428 No. 5

Written Answers. - Burtonport (Donegal) Pier.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

140 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Marine the plans, if any, he has to extend the pier at Burtonport, County Donegal.

The Department of the Marine is currently implementing the final year of the Fishery Harbour Development Programme 1989 to 1993. Under this programme provision was made for dredging of the harbour at Burtonport. To this end, hydrographic and probing surveys were undertaken to determine the bed level and extent of rock present. A site investigation was undertaken during 1992 in advance of the detailed planning of the dredging. It is intended to undertake the dredging during this summer.

There are no definite plans at present to extend the pier at Burtonport. A fishery harbours development programme for the 1994 to 1997 period is, however, currently being drawn up by the Department of the Marine and proposals for the further development of Burtonport have been submitted by Donegal County Council for possible inclusion in the programme. Pending finalisation of the programme and clarification of its funding, I am not in a position to say what further works, if any, can be undertaken at this harbour.
