Vol. 429 No. 4

Written Answers. - Food Industry/Meat Processing Sector.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

19 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the plans, if any, he has to expand output over 1992 in the meat processing sector; if he will quantify the extra employment likely to be created as a result; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

John Connor

Ceist:

22 Mr. Connor asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the policy and plans he has for the food processing industry so that it can achieve full potential in terms of increased production and job creation from now until the year 2000.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 19 and 22 together.

The general policy I intend to pursue in regard to the development of the food industry, including the meat processing sector, is set out in the Programme for Government. The programme specifically states we are committed to encouraging the development of a competitive food industry attuned to market needs and with improved value added content. It also states that maximum use will be made of the EC Structural Funds to develop the food industry in line with the recommendations of the Expert Group, by means of a specific Operational Programme for the Food Industry. I expect the report of the Expert Group to be submitted to me shortly.
