Vol. 429 No. 8

Written Answers. - Rock of Cashel.

Theresa Ahearn

Ceist:

30 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the proposals, if any, he has for the roofing of the Rock of Cashel in County Tipperary; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I presume that the Deputy is referring to the Cathedral at the Rock of Cashel. I understand that in recent years the Vicars Choral has been restored in order to provide better facilities for visitors and work is proceeding at Cormac's Chapel to restore and protect the very important frescoes there. Once Cormac's Chapel has been restored, it is proposed to begin a major programme of conservation works to the Cathedral which will take a number of years. These works will include masonry and plasterwork conservation and restoration of the roof of one of the chapels of the North transept to shelter the box tombs. There are no plans at present to roof the entire Cathedral.
