Vol. 430 No. 2

Written Answers. - ESB Pylons Regulations.

Edward Nealon

Ceist:

173 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for the Environment if, in view of the detrimental effect that ESB pylons and lines have done in the past to renowned beauty spots, he will introduce more stringent regulations and control; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The erection of major pylons and power supply lines requires planning permission under the Local Government (Planning and Development) Acts, 1963 to 1992. Decisions on applications for permission are a matter for the planning authority or An Bord Pleanála on appeal. I am precluded by law from exercising any power or control over such decisions. I have no proposals to change planning law in this regard.
