Vol. 431 No. 2

Written Answers. - Mornington (Meath) Deep Water Port.

John Bruton

Ceist:

60 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for the Marine his policy in regard to the development of a Deep Water Port at Mornington, County Meath.

Drogheda Harbour Commissioners have included in their submission for EC Structural Funds the development of a new deep water port facility at Mornington, County Meath at an estimated cost of £15.3 million. This project is currently being evaluated, along with the numerous other projects received from harbour authorities and private promoters, with a view to constructing an integrated and strategic investment plan for our commercial ports.

The objective of the plan will be to provide our main ports with adequate infrastructure and handling equipment to meet the trade demands forecast to the end of the century. It will not be possible to make final decisions on any of the projects submitted until such time as the allocation for ports under the National Plan for the utilisation of the next round of Structural Funds has been determined and the approval of the European Commission for the port development strategy received.
