Vol. 431 No. 6

Written Answers. - EC Equality Directive.

Peter Barry

Ceist:

54 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of claims from Cork city which have been received from women for arrears in the implementation of the EC Equality Directive; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Statistics are not maintained in a manner which would enable details to be provided of the number of claims for arrears under the equal treatment provisions from women in Cork city. Details of claims on a geographical basis are available by county address only. The number of claims received from women in County Cork, including Cork city, was 10,088. This represents about 12 per cent of the total of 84,800 claims received. All claims received have been processed for Phase 1 entitlement, higher personal rate of benefit and extended duration of unemployment benefit, with the exception of a small number where additional inquiries had to be made to determine entitlement.

Processing of Phase 2 entitlement, household supplement for dependants and entitlement to unemployment assistance, commenced in April. In accordance with the legislative provisions, payment of Phase 2 arrears is being made in two equal instalments—the first instalment to be paid before 31 December 1993 and the second instalment before 1 July 1994.
