Vol. 431 No. 6

Written Answers. - Cruelty to Animals.

Jim Higgins

Ceist:

56 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Justice the number of penalties imposed by the courts in 1992 for cruelty to animals.

Information on summary proceedings brought and on numbers of persons convicted for the offence of cruelty to animals is contained in the Garda Commissioner's annual crime report. However, information about the number of penalties imposed by the courts for this offence is not readily available and could only be compiled by examination of individual court records. This would require the expenditure of a disproportionate amount of staff time which could not be justified.
