Jim Higgins

Ceist:

37 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht if a letter from the Chairman of the Wildlife Advisory Council/National Heritage Council asking for clarification of the role of the Wildlife Advisory Council has been received; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Tógfaidh mé Ceisteanna 23 agus 37 le chéile.

The Wildlife Advisory Council was appointed with effect from 24 July, 1992. Its inaugural meeting took place on 11 December, 1992. It has not met per se since then. However, the National Heritage Council, which as the Deputy is aware, has the same membership as the Wildlife Advisory Council met in full session on nine occasions and in committee on 32 occasions during the period in question.

The role of the Wildlife Advisory Council is set out in section 13 of the Wildlife Act, 1976. The Chairman of the Wildlife Advisory Council, who is also Chairman of the National Heritage Council, has sought clarification of the administrative and support arrangements for the Wildlife Advisory Council.

The future role of the Wildlife Advisory Council will be considered in the context of the establishment of the National Heritage Council on a statutory basis, to which I am giving priority.
