Vol. 431 No. 8

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Medical Council Retention Fee.

Peadar Clohessy

Ceist:

7 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for Health if he has approved an increase for the Medical Council in the annual retention fee for doctors; and, if so, the increase approved.

I have approved an increase in the retention fee charged by the Medical Council. The new fee will be £100.

Does the Minister have any plans to amend the Medical Practitioners Act and, if so, will he provide for Medical Council inquiries to be held in public? At present they are held behind closed doors, which gives rise to much concern. They should be held in a more public forum.

Again, that question is not directly related to the one which has been tabled which relates to Medical Council fees, but in relation to the legislative programme some consideration will be given to a new Bill which would deal with the registration of medical practitioners. I am mindful of the Deputy's comments on the ongoing inquiry which is taking place behind closed doors. Many people, not least the Medical Council are reflecting on the efficacy of that procedure.
