Vol. 432 No. 7

Written Answers. - Wheelchair Accessible Buildings.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

35 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for the Environment the proportion of buildings to which the public have access which are wheelchair accessible; the proposals, if any, he has to introduce legal measures to extend accessibility; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have no information as to the number of buildings which are wheelchair accessible. Over the years, Government Departments and local authorities have been asked on a number of occasions by my Department to ensure that appropriate provisions is made for access for disabled people to buildings under their control. The Building Regulations, 1991, which came into operation on 1 June 1992, now place a clear duty on persons providing or reconstructing building to cater for the access and other needs of disabled people.
