98 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the total investment in tourism infrastructure; the total number of tourists who visited the country; the total net value of tourist-generated income for each of the past ten years; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
I propose to circulate in the Official Report a tabular statement setting out for each of the ten years 1983-1992, inclusive, total overseas visitor numbers to Ireland and total international travel and tourism earnings. Comparable figures for 1993 are not yet available.
Figures for total investment, involving both the private sector and a range of public/similar bodies in tourism development over the last ten years are not available in my Department. However, I propose to circulate in the Official Report a table providing details of expenditure under the aegis of my Department, on tourism infrastructure, including funding from the EC, between 1983 and 1992. Also, shown for the information of the House, are the amounts of funds provided to Bord Fáilte by the International Fund for Ireland since 1987 for tourism development in the Border area. This table does not reflect support for marketing and other aspects of tourism development including annual Exchequer Grant-in-Aid to Bord Fáilte, SFADCo and CERT.
Total support for capital investment in tourism over the period 1983-1992 was £126 million, levering further investment of some £520 million. Private investment outside State supported schemes would be considerable, and is not included in this figure.
