Vol. 433 No. 2

Written Answers. - International Language Learning Centre.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

120 Mr. Calley asked the Minister for Education her views on the fact that Dublin has the potential to become the recognised international language learning centre; the way in which her Department could help develop this recognition; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I wish to assure the Deputy that I am fully aware of the potential for the development of international language learning and international education services generally, both in Dublin and in the country as a whole.

Measures have already been taken to develop this potential through, in particular, the recent establishment of the International Education Board Ireland. This agency is representative of all institutions involved in the provision of international education services, including language schools, together with Government Departments, Bord Fáilte and an Bord Tráchtála. It will provide expert marketing and promotional services for the sector.

English as a Foreign Language is a major element in the overall provision and in this respect particular emphasis is being placed on the need for quality control. For this purpose a new Advisory Council for English Language Schools is being established which will put in place the control mechanisms to ensure the highest standards in the industry.
