Ceist:

43 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Finance the number of applications received from publicans for tax clearance certificates to date in 1993; and the actual number of tax clearance certificates that have issued to date.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 41, 42 and 43 together. I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that a total of 12,683 applications for tax clearance certificates relating to intoxicating liquor licences have been received to date by the Collector General's Office in respect of the licensing year commencing 1 October 1992. Some 1,022 applications of that total number have been received in 1993 to date. A total of 10,984 tax clearance certificates have been issued to date.

The Collector General's Office has deferred final decisions on 1,599 applications for tax clearance certificates relating to intoxicating liquor licences in respect of the licensing year commencing 1 October 1992. Decisions have been deferred in these cases in order to afford these applicants an opportunity to regularise their tax affairs. To date the Collector General's Office has not issued any refusal in respect of an application for tax clearance certificates. It is intended that over the course of the next number of weeks several hundred refusal letters will be issued by the Collector General's Office to applicants who have not availed of the opportunity granted to them to bring their tax affairs up to date.
