Vol. 433 No. 2

Written Answers. - Public House Licences.

Jim Higgins

Ceist:

39 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Finance the number of public house licences which issued in counties Mayo and Galway respectively in each of the years from 1990 to 1992 and to date.

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that their records are not kept in a manner which would enable them to readily provide the information sought, namely, on a county by county basis. While it would be possible to compile the figures requested, this could only be done at disproportionate expense.

Ceist:

40 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Finance the total number of public house licences which were issued in each of the years 1990 to 1992 and to date in 1993.

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the total number of publicans' licences (including ordinary seven-day licences, six-day licences, hotel licences, and so on) issued by Customs and Excise in the calendar years in question is as follows:

Year

Number

1990

10,469

1991

10,872

1992

6,596

1993 to date

6,272

The marked reduction in the 1992 figure is associated with the introduction of tax clearance requirements for the issue of these licences.
