Vol. 433 No. 2

Written Answers. - EC Poverty Programme.

Phil Hogan

Ceist:

53 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will give details of the various European Community initiatives that he has implemented in the period from 1989 to 1993 inclusive; the scope and extent of funding for each programme; if these programmes will be continued in the future; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Third EC Poverty Programme 1989-1994 comes under the aegis of my Department.

Three Irish projects are included in the programme, namely the PAUL project in Limerick city, the FORUM project in North and West Connemara, which are both large scale, area-based action projects, and a smaller project, operated by the Dublin Travellers Education and Development Group.

Matching funding for projects participating in the programme is provided through the Combat Poverty Agency. Total funding to the Irish projects over the period of the Programme is of the order of £3.76 million.

The current programme runs from 1989 to 1994. At present possible guidelines for a fourth Community Programme to combat social exclusion are being considered by the Commission and it is expected that proposals for a new Programme will be presented by the Commission in the autumn.
