Vol. 433 No. 2

Written Answers. - EC Initiatives.

Phil Hogan

Ceist:

95 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade if he will give details of the various European Community initiatives that he has implemented in the period from 1989 to 1993 inclusive; the scope and extent of funding for each programme; if these programmes will be continued in the future; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The only European Community initiative, outside of the national community support framework, required to be implemented by me in the period from 1989 to 1993 inclusive was INTERREG.

This initiative covers the period 1991 — 1993 and is aimed at assisting the development of internal border areas of the Community including Northern Ireland and the Border counties.

INTERREG for Ireland includes a tourism sub-programme the objective of which is the development and marketing of the Border area, North and South, as a desirable holiday destination. Total funding allocated for the sub-programme is £13.3 million of which some £9.5 million is available for approved developments on the southern side of the Border.

A decision on renewal of the INTERREG Programme for the post 1993 period has not yet been taken at EC level.
