161 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Education the proposals, if any, she has to improve the pupil teacher ratio in the primary school sector; and the expected time scale for the changes, if any, in this regard.
The pupil-techer ratio at primary level was 27.5:1 in the 1988-89 school year. Following successive improvements, including implementation of provisions made in the Programme for Economic and Social Progress, the ratio has been reduced to approximately 24.2:1 in the current school year. The Programme for Partnership Government provides for a reduction in the pupil-teacher ratio to 22:1 by 1996.
