173 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for Health the number and discipline of additional consultant medical staff posts approved for each health board and voluntary hospital since 1 January 1988.

As the Deputy is no doubt aware Comhairle na nOspidéal has statutory responsibility for approving all consultant appointments. Comhairle have furnished the data requested by the Deputy on additional consultant posts which is set out in the following tabular statement. The significant number of additional consultant posts approved by Comhairle since 1 January 1988 recorded in this tabular statement shows the commitment of my Department to developing and improving the health services within the overall context of the availability of financial resources and having regard to personnel and service criteria. I am committed to ensuring that these developments are built on and that the health services are improved and enhanced as much as possible having regard to the service, personnel and financial parameters applying.
