Vol. 435 No. 6

Ceisteanna — Questions Written Answers. - Revocation of Death Penalty.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

6 Mr. Sargent asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will make diplomatic representations to the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles seeking that the death sentence against a person (details supplied) be revoked in view of the fact that the woman who accused him of murder has retracted her statement.

Following representations made to me by Amnesty International I reviewed the evidence provided to me in the case of the individual in question.

On 31 May 1993 I made appeals both to the Governor of Texas and the Chairman of the Board of Pardons and Paroles asking them, on humanitarian grounds, to exercise their power to commute the death sentence in this case.
