Vol. 435 No. 6

Ceisteanna — Questions Written Answers. - Killing of Islamic Opposition Militants.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

8 Mr. Sargent asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will write to the Government of Algeria to express his concern over the killing of at least 370 alleged Islamic opposition militants by security forces in the first seven months of 1993.

The Government, together with their partners in the European Community, have already made known to the Algerian authorities their deep concern at the escalation of violence in Algeria and have vigorously condemned all acts of terrorism there by whomsoever committed. We have also expressed anxiety about terrorist acts directed against foreign residents in that country, including nationals of EC member states.

The Twelve have encouraged the Algerian authorities to promote political dialogue between all parties concerned. We have made clear the importance we attach to ensuring respect for human rights, tolerance and political pluralism in Algeria. We will continue to follow closely the evolution of events in Algeria.
