Vol. 435 No. 6

Ceisteanna — Questions Written Answers. - Greyhound Coursing Regulation.

Robert Molloy

Ceist:

77 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the proposals, if any, he has for the regulation of greyhound coursing; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Greyhound Industry (Amendment) Bill, 1993 which was presented to the House today proposes to empower the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry to make regulations providing for the muzzling of greyhounds at coursing meetings and for the veterinary supervision of hares while in captivity.

The Irish Coursing Club have agreed to introduce muzzling on a phased basis during the present coursing season with a view to the eventual muzzling of all greyhounds at all coursing meetings. I have established a monitoring committee to oversee the running of coursing meetings for the current season.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

79 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if any of his Department's officials will be attending the coursing meeting in Balbriggan, County Dublin on 21 November 1993, to oversee the running of this event, including the release into the wild of those hares not killed during the meeting.

A Department official will attend the coursing meeting in question.
