Vol. 435 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions Written Answers. - Maternity Leave.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

40 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the difficulties a school experiences when its approved school secretary goes on maternity leave and her Department refuses to sanction a temporary secretary; the measures, if any, she proposes to take in this regard; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

There is no provision under the existing scheme for temporary replacement in the event of a school secretary taking maternity leave.

This position is similar to that which applies to other clerical staff in public and local authority bodies.

I am aware that certain schools have raised issues regarding their particular circumstances and I am having these examined within my Department.
