Vol. 436 No. 1

Written Answers. - Youghal (Cork) School Extension.

Paul Bradford

Ceist:

183 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Education if she has received a request from the Christian Brothers secondary school, Youghal, County Cork, for assistance towards the cost of building a school hall; her views on whether such a facility is urgently needed in this school, where 450 students are now occupying a school built for 400 students; her views on whether the recreational facilities available to the students are therefore adequate; and if she will respond favourably to the request for funding.

An application has been received from this school for a grant to build a sports hall. In the light of the information received the school's accommodation requirements are being examined with a view to providing extra teaching space if necessary.

Due to demands on the capital resources available, priority has been given for some time to the provision of essential teaching spaces. As a result, it is not possible to make funding available at present for the provision of physical education facilities at existing schools without such facilities. The provision of indoor sports accommodation in existing schools, in the form of a general purpose area at primary level and a hall at secondary level, will resume as soon as pressure on available resources for urgent classroom accommodation has eased.
