Vol. 436 No. 4

Written Answers. - Galway Treatment Works.

Robert Molloy

Ceist:

30 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for the Environment the steps, if any, that will be taken to ensure that the proposed Galway sewage treatment works are not obtrusive on the landscape; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Following assessment of the EIS which was prepared in respect of this scheme, I certified in May 1993 that, subject to specified modifications, the proposed development at Mutton Island will, in my opinion, embody the best practicable means to prevent or limit significant adverse effects on the environment. The EIS addressed the visual impact of the proposed treatment plant structures and provided for certain ameliorative measures to ensure that the impact of these will be minimised by careful architectural design.
