As responsibility in this matter rests with local authorities, details of the amounts paid out annually in respect of public liability claims and associated legal costs are not available in my Department. It is estimated, however, that the cost of such claims paid in 1993 will be approximately £20 million. There are no proposals to provide any direct Exchequer assistance to local authorities to meet the cost of claims. The Minister for Commerce and Technology has indicated, however, that he is considering certain proposals in relation to personal injury claims. In addition, a report is expected shortly from the Law Reform Commission relating to the amendment of the law on occupier's liability. This report will fall to be considered, in the first instance, by the Minister for Equality and Law Reform.
