Vol. 436 No. 4

Written Answers. - Use of Unleaded Petrol.

Mary Harney

Ceist:

51 Miss Harney asked the Minister for the Environment whether 35 per cent of petrol sold is unleaded while over 80 per cent of cars are designed for the use of unleaded petrol; if there are any new measures being proposed to accelerate the use of unleaded petrol; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Wexford): The most recent information available to my Department is that unleaded petrol now accounts for over 41 per cent of all petrol sales in Ireland. Ireland therefore stands in a relatively advanced position within the EU as regards use of unleaded petrol. This position will further improve as new vehicles designed to run on unleaded petrol only increase their share of the national fleet.

The excise duty differential in favour of unleaded petrol, implemented over a number of budgets and now amounting to 2.56 pence per litre, continues to provide an important financial incentive for the use of unleaded petrol.
