Vol. 436 No. 7

Written Answers. - Health Services Expenditure.

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

205 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Health if he will give details of the total amount of expenditure on the health services for each year since 1987, on the basis of a previous figure given for 1987 of £1,314 million; and the total number working in the health services for each year since 1987, divided into permanent and temporary positions.

Having regard to the figure quoted by the Deputy in respect of 1987 expenditure, I am assuming that he has included net non-capital expenditure, the European Social Fund, treatment benefits of a health nature operated by the Department of Social Welfare and net capital expenditure. On this basis the information requested by the Deputy is as follows:

(a) The figure for permanent wholetime equivalent staff includes job sharing staff excluded for all of the other years.
(b) The employment figures for 1991 and 1992 exclude employment in commercial and noncommercial State-sponsored bodies under the aegis of the Department of Health.
The personnel data requested by the Deputy outlined above gives details of the numbers employed in a wholetime permanent capacity and a wholetime temporary capacity expressed in wholetime equivalence. It should be noted that those in other types of employment i.e. part-time, sessional, job-sharing, locum and training posts are presented separately. The date should be read in this light.
