Ceist:103 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Finance the number of retail outlets registered for VAT added in each of the years 1973, 1983 and 1993.

Traders are classified by reference to the information supplied at the time of registration for VAT. If there is a change in the main business activity, the original trade classification is not normally altered. Details of the number of retail outlets registered for VAT are as follows; as figures for 1993 will not be available until 1994, figures for 1992 are included for comparison purposes:
