Vol. 436 No. 7

Written Answers. - Boyle (Roscommon) Sewage Treatment Plant.

John Connor

Ceist:

140 Mr. Connor asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the sewage treatment and disposal plant servicing Boyle, County Roscommon, is deficient, giving rise to pollution of the Boyle River, offensive odours over a wide neighbourhood and a public health hazard; and if he will respond positively to the request from Roscommon County Council for funding to upgrade this plant in 1994.

The management and operation of existing sewage treatment facilities is the responsibility of the local authority concerned. I understand that Roscommon County Council have recently resolved certain operational difficulties affecting the Boyle plant.

As regards the upgrading of this plant, a preliminary report for Boyle sewerage improvement scheme is under consideration in my Department. The question of funding for this scheme is being examined in the context of the post-1993 Operational Programme for Environmental Services.
