Vol. 437 No. 4

Written Answers. - Family Planning Services.

Proinsias De Rossa

Ceist:

49 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Health if he will provide the resources necessary to make family planning services available to medical card holders.

Family planning services such as the provision of family planning advice and the prescribing of the contraceptive pill are made available to medical card holders under the General Medical Services Scheme. As I indicated in a reply to a previous question on this subject earlier this year the GMS scheme in general does not cover items which do not require a doctor's prescription and I have no plans to change this situation at present. Current Family Planning legislation provides for a comprehensive family planning service to be made available by each health board and I have no indication that such services are not being provided in any health board area.
