255 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice if a special Garda telephone number could be provided as part of the measures to combat drug dealing in Dublin's north inner city to enable local people to contact the Garda Drug Unit on a confidential basis.
A facility already exists whereby members of the public can contact the gardaí on the basis of total confidentiality. The "Garda Confidential Line Free-Phone" (1800 589 589) is listed in the telephone directory and has been in operation since January 1992.
I am advised by the Garda authorities that they consider this telephone line to be adequate at the present time to meet the needs of any person who may wish to contact the gardaí on a confidential basis, but the publicity for the number is being reviewed at present.
