Vol. 438 No. 3

Written Answers. - Remedial Teacher Appointments.

Seymour Crawford

Ceist:

148 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for Education the position in relation to the appointment of remedial teachers for six schools in the Truagh and Tyholland parishes, County Monaghan.

As the Deputy may be aware, the Programme for a Partnership Government made a specific commitment to the appointment of a substantial number of additional remedial teachers by September 1996.

As part of this commitment I approved the appointment of an additional 86 remedial teachers in the current school year, bringing the total now in place to 1,033.

Current demographic trends will give me further opportunities to allocate additional teacher posts to support pupils with special educational needs in 1994. As part of this development, I intend to allocate 100 of these posts to provide additional remedial support in national schools. The posts will be allocated on the basis of priority of need, as identified by my Department's inspectorate.
The needs of all schools including the schools mentioned by the Deputy, will be considered in the context of this development.
