150 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for Education the position in relation to the proposed extension to Knockconan National School, County Monaghan; if she intends that new classrooms will be refurbished, a new staff room will be provided, a remedial/library/medical room will be provided, both of which to be redesigned in an existing classroom and a proper play area to be provided; and if she will make a statement on when she intends to carry out these works.

Ceist:

151 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for Education the position in relation to the proposal for a new amalgamated school for the Deravoy and Knockconan National Schools, County Monaghan; and if she will make a statement in relation to the facilities that will be provided at this new school.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 149, 150 and 151 together.

I am aware that the existing facilities at Deravoy and Knockconan National Schools are in need of upgrading. In view of the fact that both schools are situated in the same parish and having regard to the demographic trends, it has been decided in my Department to examine the possibility of amalgamating the two schools into a single school and providing the required accommodation as an alternative to proceeding with works to both school buildings.
In the circumstances I am not in a position at this stage to state precisely what facilities will be provided for the pupils of the schools in question.
