Vol. 438 No. 8

Written Answers. - Geriatric Assessment Units.

Edward Nealon

Ceist:

106 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Health the general hospitals throughout the country that now have geriatric assessment centres; and if he will make a statement on the plans or policies, if any, he has in this area.

The general hospitals which have specialist units for the elderly, including assessment and rehabilitation facilities, are as follows:

St. Columcille's, Dublin

St. James's, Dublin

St. Vincent's, Elm Park, Dublin
Mater, Dublin
Beaumont, Dublin
James Connolly Memorial, Dublin
Meath, Dublin
Cork Regional
Limerick Regional
Nenagh General
Ennis General
Waterford Regional
Merlin Park Regional
Castlebar General
General Hospital, Roscommon
Letterkenny General
Sligo General
Tullamore General
It is my intention to ensure that every general hospital will have or have access to a specialist unit for the elderly. Funding is being made available to the Midland Health Board to establish such an assessment and rehabilitation unit at Mullingar General Hospital. Proposals for funding to develop such units in the North-Eastern Health Board area, in South Tipperary, Wexford, Kilkenny and Tralee are being considered by my Department.
