Vol. 438 No. 8

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

111 Mr. E. Kenny asked the Minister for Education if school transport will be made available for persons (details supplied) in County Mayo.

The three children in the family in question are ineligible, on distance grounds, for free transport to their nearest school. In order to be eligible, under the terms of the school transport scheme, children under ten years of age must live at least two miles from, and be attending, their nearest national school, while older children must live at least three miles away. This family's home is one mile from the school. They may avail of the concession of fare-paying transport to that school, provided there is accommodation available after all the eligible children are catered for and that no extra cost is incurred in facilitating them. There is room on the bus for them at present and the family have been made aware of the position by Bus Éireann, my Department's agent in the operation of the scheme.
