Vol. 439 No. 4

Written Answers. - Breast Cancer Programme.

Liz McManus

Ceist:

149 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Health if he will initiate a multi-media campaign in order to carry out a national education programme on breast cancer; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of, and indeed very much share, the concern about the incidence of breast cancer in the community. The position is that decisions on the policy to be followed in the area will be influenced by the outcome of the Eccles Breast Screening Programme, which is supported by my Department, the European Commission and the Mater Foundation, in association with other agencies.

Meanwhile, my Department's Health Promotion Unit, in conjunction with the Irish Cancer Society, is engaged in on-going awareness programmes both at national and local level, to improve lifestyle habits and thereby reduce the incidence of all cancers, including breast cancer, among the general public.
