Vol. 440 No. 7

Written Answers. - Industrial School Placement.

Gay Mitchell

Ceist:

284 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education if she will examine the case of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 12 for whom placement in St. Joseph's Industrial School, Clonmel, has been suggested; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the unfortunate circumstances of this case and I can assure the Deputy that every effort is being made to ensure that the needs of the boy in question are fully addressed. The boy was recently assessed at St. Mitchael's Remand and Assessment Centre and was diagnosed as requiring specialist psychiatric and therapeutic intervention. It was recommended that this intervention take place in advance of any decision regarding his long term placement.

At the most recent hearing of this case on 22 March 1993, the court made a "Fit Person Order" charging the Eastern Health Board with responsibility for ensuring that the boy receives the necessary specialist treatment recommended in the assessment. I understand that the Eastern Health Board is currently making the necessary arrangements and my Department is liaising with the health board with a view to ensuring that appropriate arrangements are made to meet the boy's educational needs.
The question of more long term arrangements for the boy will be addressed when the treatment referred to above has been completed.
