Vol. 440 No. 7

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Jim O'Keeffe

Ceist:

285 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the difficulties which have arisen for families in the Ballyregan area, Dunderrow, Kinsale, County Cork, where the children who are attending Kinsale post-primary schools have to travel up to five miles a day because a pick-up point at Ballinamona Cross is so far away from them; if she will have arrangements made for the school bus to detour through Ballyregan and on to Dunderrow involving little additional mileage but resulting in a more acceptable service to the families concerned; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

It is not open to my Department to make any change to the existing service. The families in question reside in Kinsale post-primary centre catchment area, and are fully eligible, under the terms of the post-primary school transport scheme, for transport to that centre. They all live between 0.1 and 1.5 miles from the route of service and are, therefore, considered to have a reasonable and adequate level of service in the context of the overall operation of the scheme.
