Vol. 440 No. 7

Written Answers. - Ministerial Visits.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

139 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the number of members of the permanent Civil Service who accompanied him on his recent trips abroad; the number, rank and status of those other than the permanent service who travelled; the reason these persons were included; the mode of transport used in each case; the costs involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have travelled abroad on three occasions, i.e. to Brussels, Athens and the USA since the beginning of this year. All of the staff who travelled with me are members of the permanent Civil Service except my special adviser who is not a permanent civil servant.

The mode of transport on the outward journeys to Brussels and Athens was by Government jet and the return journeys were by scheduled flights. The journeys to and from the USA were also by scheduled flights. The total cost to the Department of these journeys was £11,122.00.

It was necessary for the officers concerned to accompany me so that I might be fully and expertly briefed on the particular subjects on which I was engaged in my ministerial capacity.

The following schedule shows the breakdown of the rank of those who travelled, the destination and dates involved.
