Vol. 441 No. 1

Written Answers. - Dog Registration.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

94 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for the Environment if he has received a recommendation from the Irish Kennel Club to the effect that the Irish Coursing Club should be the registration body for all dogs; if he has further received statements from branches of the ISPCA and the Irish Council against Blood Sports deploring that recommendation; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The working group established last year to examine the possibility of a national registration and identification scheme for dogs received a submission from the Irish Kennel Club suggesting that the club and the Irish Coursing Club could operate such a scheme on a joint venture basis. The working group will be reporting to me shortly and I will then give careful consideration to the various issues involved. I recently received a submission from the Irish Council against Blood Sports in the matter.
